Firefighter Estate Planning Program questions

The questions people in your line of work ask most often, answered plainly.

I already have a pension beneficiary on file. Isn't that enough?

No. A beneficiary form controls that one benefit. It does not cover your house, vehicles, individually held accounts, personal property, or the guardianship of your children. Those need a will.

Do volunteer firefighters need this more or less than career staff?

Often more. Volunteer departments frequently provide narrower benefit coverage, so a larger share of the family's protection depends on documents you create yourself.

Can my spouse and I complete plans at the same time?

Yes. Most couples build coordinated plans, naming each other as agent and primary beneficiary, then naming contingent choices in case both of you are affected.

How long does it take?

The questionnaire typically takes a single sitting and can be paused. Signing follows after that; you do not need to be present anywhere in person where remote signing is permitted.

What if I'm diagnosed with an occupational illness later?

You can update your documents. What matters now is having a valid will and power of attorney in place, and keeping your exposure and department records accessible so a presumption claim can actually be filed.

Is an attorney involved, or is this just software?

The documents come from templates an estate planning attorney wrote and maintains, but the online process is self-serve — no attorney reads your particular plan unless you ask for that. A review or a full consultation can be added if you want one.

What if my department has its own legal plan?

Use whichever gets it done. If the department program has a waiting list or requires in-person appointments you can't make, this exists to remove that excuse.
